Stepping Out

Joe Jackson (1954–)

“Stepping Out” was Joe Jackson’s biggest US hit. He played all the instruments except for a drummer, who just mimics the snare drum. The rest of the drumming is provided by a Korg KR55 drum machine, which he brought with him on his 2019 tour to accompany the song. Few songs I have ever heard have managed to give me the feeling of being transported to another place for the song’s duration. Pitchfork places it #153 of the 200 greatest songs of the 80s. Jackson has received five Grammy Award nominations. He discussed his bisexuality in his 1999 autobiography, A Cure For Gravity. It’s curious that half the last half dozen songs are by bisexual Brits.
